Ohio becomes 1st state to break ground on electric vehicle charging station under NEVI program

COLUMBUS — Ohio became the first state in the country to break ground Wednesday on a large electric vehicle (EV) charging station as part of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program.

Governor Mike DeWine announced this Wednesday as the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) broke ground on the facility at the Pilot Travel Center along Interstate 70 at U.S. Route 42 between Columbus and Dayton.

“Ohio continues to lead in this rising sector,” said Governor DeWine. “From securing investments by manufacturers to building key infrastructure, we are truly positioning Ohioans for the electric future. This groundbreaking further demonstrates the state’s commitment to installing chargers as quickly as possible for the benefit of Ohio drivers.”

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – New technology is bringing years-old cold cases to life in an effort to get detectives and families closer to answers.

In August, NBC4 reported on how technology developed by animators at Ohio State University is helping the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation reconstruct faces when unidentified human remains are found.

Using her iPhone, BCI Criminal Intelligence Analyst and Forensic Artist Sam Molnar takes photos of unidentified skeletal remains, then sends them to the graphics team at OSU, which uses a program to create 3D printed skulls. Molnar can then reconstruct the face of the deceased using clay on top of the 3D print without disturbing the original evidence.

Ohio to build 27 new electric vehicle charging stations along Interstate highways

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Ohio has made arrangements to build more than two dozen new electric vehicle charging stations along highways around the state by 2024, Gov. Mike DeWine announced Thursday.

The 27 new charging stations, each of which will have at least four ports, will be located at gas stations, stores, and restaurants along Interstates 70, 71, 76, 77 and 90, DeWine said at a Columbus-area news conference. Two will be in the Cleveland area – at a Shell gas station off Interstate 71 on State Route 82 in Strongsville and a Chase Bank off Interstate 77 on Rocksville Road in Independence, according to an Ohio Department of Transportation list.

Council approves $550,000 to rent more portable security cameras, lights at Columbus parks

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Columbus City Council approved Monday night to spend $550,000 on more temporary lights and security camera systems to place in the city’s parks.

According to the ordinance unanimously passed by council, the Columbus Division of Police identified 25 initial locations where the portable lights and cameras can go.

This is the second straight year council has passed a measure such as this.
After several shootings at parks across Columbus last year, some of which were fatal, council approved funding for 25 cameras. The cameras are mobile and can be moved as needed.

Ohio State Highway Patrol to offer air support to local law enforcement

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WKBN) – Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has announced that the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) would be enhancing its aviation technology in order to offer improved air support to local law enforcement agencies.

As part of the Ohio Violent Crime Reduction Grant Program, approximately $6 million in funding will be awarded to the OSHP.

The funding is specifically going toward improving OSHP’s live-streaming aviation technology. As of now, OSHP’s current video streaming capabilities are generally limited to Columbus and Akron. In other parts of Ohio, pilots must describe what they are seeing to those on the ground.
