Established in 1998 by the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players’ Association, Hockey Fights Cancer unites the hockey community in a collective effort to support cancer patients and their families. The Columbus Blue Jackets, since their inception in 2000, have been fervently dedicated to this initiative, making a significant impact on the fight against pediatric cancer.

Ohio State men’s basketball pulls away from Merrimack in win

Roddy Gayle Jr. scored 20 points, Zed Key added a double-double off the bench and the Ohio State men’s basketball team used a big second-half run to break away from Merrimack in a 76-52 victory on Nov. 15.

A 3-pointer from Bryan Etumnu and a pair of free throws by Samba Diallo had Merrimack within six points with about 9 1/2 minutes to go. Ohio State responded with a 16-0 run in which Jamison Battle hit two 3-pointers and scored eight points, giving the Buckeyes a 65-43 lead with 5 1/2 minutes remaining.

The Buckeyes extended the run to 24-3 and led 73-46 with 2:13 to go.

Ryan Earns 200th Win at Ohio State with 53-0 Victory over Edinboro

No. 7 Ohio State (2-0) earned its second dual victory of the season with a 53-0 win over visiting Edinboro (0-1) Sunday at the Covelli Center. The win gave Tom Ryan, head coach of the Buckeyes, his 200th dual victory at Ohio State. He now has 309 for his career.

Winners of 43rd Columbus Marathon announced

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The 43rd annual Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon and Half Marathon brought 12,000 runners and walkers to downtown Columbus Sunday morning.

This year’s competition was sold out, and as a result, more than $1 million was raised for the children’s hospital. More than $13 million has been raised to support the work of the hospital since the partnership began in 2012.

The life-changing journey for a Columbus Marathon runner

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – On Sunday approximately 12,000 runners will hit the pavement for the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon and Half Marathon. Before the event begins, the race will recognize the Lashutka Spirit Award winners, who exemplify bravery and perseverance.

One of them is Justin Boggs, who has truly seen his outlook on life change through running.

“At first, I used to run as a way to get in shape, but now, I want to get in shape so I can run better, run with more people and run longer,” said Boggs.

Ohio Soccer Takes Down Buffalo 1-0

The Ohio women’s soccer team (3-4-2) won their first game in Mid-American Conference play by beating Buffalo (4-2-3) 1-0 this afternoon (Sept. 24). The Bobcats’ win was Buffalo’s conference loss since 2021.

Sophomore goalkeeper Celeste Sloma (Columbus, Ohio) faced the first action of the game for the Bobcats. In quick succession, the sophomore faced two challenging shots that threatened the Bobcats. However, she was able to keep them out and maintain the 0-0 score.

Fanatics expands retail network with new Columbus sportsbook

Monument to Baseball Pioneer King Solomon White Coming to Bellaire

The Ohio History Connection in Columbus has announced that the application filed by the Great Stone Viaduct Historical Education Society has been selected to honor King Solomon White.

White was a baseball pioneer in the late 19th and early 20th century who advocated for the lifting of the color bar in baseball which prevented him, and other similarly situated Black baseball players, from playing the great American pastime in the major leagues.

The application was selected from among 53 applications filed in a special call by OHC to lift up outstanding examples of minority heritage in the Buckeye State. The application was also awarded grant funding of $3,585 to assist in the cost of the marker by the Karen and Robert Lucas Regional Fund promoting local history.

Huge weekend of high school football kicks off season

OHIO — What better place to begin the 2023 Ohio High School Athletic Association Game of the Week on Spectrum News 1, then where it will end?

Of course, Canton’s Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium is the site of the OHSAA state championships Nov. 30 through Dec. 2, but it’s also the venue for a gathering of state champions—including from outside Ohio—on Saturday.

It’s all part of the “Northeast Ohio vs. America Showcase”, a series of four games featuring top teams from that part of the state, as well as schools from Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky and Virginia.
