Columbus reveals new affordable housing apartment complex near Topiary Park

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Topiary Park Crossing apartments are officially open. The five-story building is bringing affordable housing to the area.

“Everybody in Columbus regardless of where you work, what your lifestyles are, or what your economic situation is [deserves affordable housing.] This project is one of many to come that is forging the pathway for Columbus as the best neighborhood,” said Alex Fischer, chair of the Columbus Downtown Development Corporation board.

Mayor Andrew Ginther said the project is part of making downtown more inclusive and vibrant. It’s also about allowing anyone who wants to live downtown, the opportunity to do so.

Federal affordable housing plan announced in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – The federal government has a new action plan aimed at providing affordable housing, and the announcement of the program happened in Columbus Monday.

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge chose Columbus to make the announcement

Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther said affordable housing isn’t just the city’s issue — it’s a regional issue, and Columbus is already examining what it can do to benefit from this.

“We have a supply problem here in central Ohio — demand continues to go up, supply remains flat,” he said.

According to the Ohio National Low Income Housing Coalition — Ohio as a state is short more than 254 thousand affordable and available rental homes.

Is Upper Arlington really Ohio’s priciest suburb? That’s what Travel + Leisure says

Upper Arlington is the most expensive suburb in Ohio, according to a list posted Sunday in Travel + Leisure magazine.

Homes in the Columbus suburb had a median sale price in March of $543,950, the article said. It indicated that it used data from Zillow and Redfin in its analysis of pricy real estate in each state.

The publication did not explain the exact methodology for how it came up with the list, and the author could not be reached immediately for comment.

But according to Zillow, other Ohio suburbs have far higher home values than Upper Arlington, including Marble Cliff, where the average home is worth $810,722.

Central Ohio congregations come together to push leaders into action on affordable housing

Dozens of Central Ohio congregations are coming together to push Columbus and Franklin County leaders into action on affordable housing. The group is called Building Responsibility, Equality and Dignity, or BREAD.

BREAD gathered members at Washington Gladden Social Justice Park on Monday to ramp up action needed to “move the needle” on some of the biggest problems facing Central Ohio families.

“A number of fellow citizens are just not aware of how serious the crisis is in Central Ohio concerning affordable housing,” said Pastor Charles Leister of New Beginnings Christian Center, whose congregation is one of 43 that makeup BREAD. “The Kirwan Institute at Ohio State indicates it’s a billion-dollar problem.”
