Columbus approves $4M to complete treatment center

Columbus City Council approved more than $4 million Monday to complete the construction of the new Franklin County Crisis Care Center.

The new facility will allow the Alcohol, Drug, and Mental Health Board of Franklin County (ADAMH) to increase its continuum of care.

ADAMH representatives said once it’s complete, the new center will have the resources necessary to meet the needs of those experiencing mental health or substance use issues in Franklin County.

Experts say exercise can lead to the prevention of lung cancer

November is National Lung Cancer Awareness Month. In this country, lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer-related deaths.

Researchers say that targeted exercise could help lower inflamation linked to cancer development. Ohio State University experts use recommendations from the American College of Sports Medicine to explain what you could be doing right now to lower your risk immediately.

“And those are basically two to three weight training sessions a week. And then also five days a week of 30 minutes or more of cardio-type exercise. That would be walking, biking, any cardiovascular type,” said Marisa Bittoni, Ohio State University.

Columbus Buddy Walk raises money for local Down Syndrome Association

Glute-focused gym Peach Haus opens in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Central Ohioans with a passion for powerful glutes have a new home in Columbus.

Dubbed one of the first glute-focused gyms in Ohio, Peach Haus is the latest business to open on North Fourth Street in Italian Village. Its owner Molly Lyons hopes the studio — where there are “no ifs, just good butts” — will attract fitness fanatics and foes alike looking to gain glute muscles.

“We jokingly say, ‘If we’re opening a booty gym, we have to have a sense of humor,’” Lyons said.

New toolkit for Ohio employers focuses on workplace mental health

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WDTN) – Three organizations in Ohio are joining forces to address the growing mental health crisis by teaching employers how to address their employee’s needs.

The Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation, Ohio Chamber of Commerce and Cardinal Health partnered to create the Employer Mental Health Toolkit.

According to the toolkit, employees struggling with anxiety or depression can lead to five missed days of work and 15 lost days of productivity per quarter.

What you need to know to go to Komen Columbus Race for the Cure on Saturday

An estimated 43,000-plus women and more than 500 men will die from breast cancer in the U.S. this year. Since 1982, the Susan G. Komen organization has fought to reduce — and hopefully, put an end to — such deaths.

The group’s efforts are well-known, particularly its flagship event, Race for the Cure, held annually in more than 50 locations in the country. Locally, the Komen Columbus Race for the Cure will begin at 8:45 a.m. Saturday with a timed 5K, followed by an untimed 5K run/walk and a one-mile family fun walk.
