BalletMet’s ‘The Nutcracker’ returns to Ohio Theatre

One of Columbus’ most cherished holiday traditions dating back to 1974 is returning to the Ohio Theatre this week.

“The Nutcracker” opens on Thursday at the Ohio Theatre with 20 performances through Dec. 23. The production will feature more than 180 academy students and trainees alongside the professional company and BalletMet 2.

“The Nutcracker has become an expectation in our community every holiday season, and we cannot wait to bring it back again this year,” said BalletMet Artistic Director Edwaard Liang. “Many of our dancers have performed The Nutcracker hundreds of times, but the magic of this ballet is still palpable year after year. It’s an honor to share this production with Columbus yet again.”

Comedian Bill Burr coming to Columbus in 2024

Grammy and Emmy-nominated comedian Bill Burr is coming to Columbus in 2024.

Burr will be performing at the Schottenstein Center on May 16 for his upcoming tour.

Burr made his debut as host of Saturday Night Live on Oct. 10, 2020, and has appeared on television shows, film and more.

Baby girl Bornean orangutan born at Columbus Zoo

Last week, the Columbus Zoo welcomed a baby female Bornean orangutan into the world, marking the first birth of the critically endangered species at the zoo in over 60 years.

The baby orangutan was born on Nov. 28 at 12:34 a.m. to first-time mother Khali, who is 17. The zoo said the baby appears to be “bright and strong.” It also reports that Khali is attentive to the baby’s needs and spends her time grooming and snuggling her baby. Khali has been bringing her baby over to the keepers for visual examinations, the zoo said.

Columbus nonprofit’s shipment to serve families for Christmas stuck in customs

A Columbus-based organization’s plans to spread joy were almost ruined this holiday season.

The organization, Wagons Ho Ho Ho, packs Christmas meals in wagons for families across central Ohio.

“It’s nice to alleviate some of that stress with that Christmas dinner but also giving a child this old-fashioned wagon that stays with them for years and years and years,” said Donn Ditzhazy, Board Member of Wagons Ho Ho Ho.

Bikers trade helmets for aprons: Columbus motorcycle clubs serve Thanksgiving feast to homeless

Nearly a dozen Columbus motorcycle clubs spent time in the kitchen serving Thanksgiving dinner to Columbus’ homeless community.

“It’s just an honor for us to do it,” said Amy Stromer, a member of the Saddle Tramps motorcycle club who volunteered to pass out Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie Thanksgiving morning at the Faith Mission on Grant Avenue.

The dinner created by the Saddle Tramps has been a holiday tradition for nearly 20 years, where motorcycle groups across the city have volunteered to serve dinner to people with nowhere to go.

Columbus Dream Center serves 1,000 Thanksgiving meals\

Hundreds of hot, free Thanksgiving meals were served at the Columbus Dream Center Thursday morning.

Bob Evans paired up with the nonprofit to feed anyone who was hungry. Across 13 Dream Center locations, 1,000 meals are being handed out.

The location on Greenwood Avenue handed out about 200.
