Police therapy dogs train at Columbus Zoo

in Animals/Community/Local News

It was hard to tell who had more fun at the Columbus Zoo on Thursday: the police K9 therapy dogs, or their handlers.

Fourteen law enforcement K9 therapy teams were at the zoo for training, taking in the smorgasbord of sights, smells, people and sounds — like when they were heckled by the seals at Adventure Cove.

“The great thing about these dogs is they’re used for everything,” said Darrah Metz, a deputy with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office who partners with Mattis, a 6-year-old English Labrador.

Bill would reward landlords who allow some pets without added rent or fees

in Animals/Community/Local News

A bipartisan duo of lawmakers is hoping to alleviate the housing crisis by targeting a major cost for many renters: their cats and dogs.

House Bill 277 would create a tax credit for landlords who allow companion animals – defined as cats or dogs – in units without added security deposits or fees. For up to 10 units, landlords could earn $750 per unit, reflecting the average additional cost for pet-friendly units, sponsor Rep. Juanita Brent (D-Cleveland) said last week.

“The otters in our habitat love to swim. They love to dive,” Smith said. “It’s not something that our guests get to experience currently, so I’m really looking forward to sharing that with them.”

in Animals/Community/Local News/Pets

The 4-year-old pit bull mix had the opportunity to try out the shelter’s enrichment playground, with Behavior Coordinator Becca Moser along for the ride. Throughout her adventure, Loretta was nearly inseparable from a hedgehog chew toy.

“She might have a little destructive side to her when it comes to her toys,” Moser joked. “She probably could have laid in the grass and chewed on that toy for hours.”

The shelter’s new playground includes a few obstacle course structures, including jumping hurdles, stairs, and puzzles that the dogs can solve to get treats.
