The Crawford County Fair flower show was barely ended when some of us headed for Columbus to arrange fresh flower designs for the series of shows at the Ohio State Fair. The first show on July 28 brought out a group of titles around the theme “Welcome to My Garden.” These shows have been the work of several members of the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs for many years. We gather cut flowers, select containers and other components and spend around 3 hours making fresh arrangements.
June Gebhardt and I made the trip driving separately. “Garden Gate,” “Moonlight Garden” and “Sunny Patch” were three classes we both entered although my commitment took me on to make all eight garden titles. There were no specifications for “Garden Gate.” That means a designer can make any floral design he or she wants to make. Several entries were like panels with flowers to add interest. My small wheelbarrow held a mass design with many tints and shades of pink including roses with tri-colored beech foliage. June employed sunflowers, Russian sage, liatris and a narrow piece of wood in a vase.
